In the Navy

Doug retired from the Navy in 1967 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer and the rate of Shipfitter.

Doug was a master metal worker. These are pictures of his shop on one of the ships that he was stationed on. It was likely taken on the USS Coral Sea sometime in the sixties.

Doug said of his years of practice metal working on ships that he "threw away, ruined and wasted enough metal to build three aircraft carriers."

Hanging out on various leaves of duty.

Shaking hands with Sam Jordan. The back of the photo reads: "Here's to the world's first cook USN chef Douglas Slocum./ The World's Second best cook, Sam Jordan."

It is astounding how much Doug, Sr. and Doug, Jr. look and posture alike. It is unfortunate that more family involvement did not occur. The resemblance is extraordinary.

If you have any pictures of you, Doug Jr., Karen or Tina click on "About Doug" and email them to me. I'd love to post more pictures of the entire family (We don't have many).

Let's get as many pictures of us on this blog as possible so that it can act as a memorial and a portal of new life and relationships.

I love you Edith and thank you for all that you are and have been for me, Katema and Keisha in the past. We have not forgotten you (or Tina) and the time that we spent together.

  3. Kendal you have really shown LOVE!

The love you have for your/our father is clearly seen. I'm not just talking about the posting of this blog. I'm talking about the love that is shown in your responses, believe me, LOVE IS SEEN!

I remember the adorable & loving children you, Katema and Keisha were...beautiful!

The last time that I sat face to face with Doug was at Grandma Glady's passing. We would sit up nights drinking coffee & talking. Doug could not relax because he was concerned about your well being as well as grieving the loss of his mother.

I saw the love Doug had for you as I see the love you have for him. Doug said many good things to me about you Kendal!

I know Doug loved us all just as all of us love him...we love Doug in our own unique & special way(s), just as we all grieve his loss...It's ashame that we all did not come together with Doug before his passing. It would of been beautiful for him to see all his children, grandchildren & great grandchildren together (there are many great grands of Doug)..Ok enough of my rambling on & on.

To all of my brothers & sisters, I pray that your hearts be comforted in our time of loss.

    Your Sis
    Tina

I'm sorry everyone I just can't help it!

I'm laughing right now, and telling the truth.
